Research Guidance for Curriculum & Instruction Graduate Programs: 6. Creating a Research Question

Steps to Creating Your Research Question and then Researching Your Question

STEP 1: Compose your research question. A clear research question will identify:

  • participants or population

  • a measurable problem

  • an intervention

  • a potential solution

STEP 2: Go to the CUC databases and set your limiters: peer-review and no older than 5 years

STEP 3: Using your research question, identify the keywords that you will use in your database search.

STEP 4: After an initial search using the keywords in the database, identify at least one article and look at the subject terms or keywords identified for that article in the record.

STEP 5: If you cannot find one article that is similar to what you want, try alternative synonyms (example: children OR adolescents OR youths) to expand your results

STEP 6: Save the full text results and the citation of articles you want to keep or request articles that are not full text (this is a free service).

STEP 7: If you need help finding materials, contact the CUC library. We are here to help!

NOTE: If you are feeling overwhelmed with collecting resources, consider using a bibliographic manager like Endnote or Zotero or create a Google Folder to store all of your articles. Save your searches and results so that you can revisit them or share them in the future.
